War on obesity and diabetes by reducing intake of drinks with sugar to 16oz in New York City

Why would anybody want to drink sweetened beverages with a healthy meal instead of water?

Mayor Bloomberg wants to restrict sugared drink sizes to 16 oz in New York City

This is one of perhaps many posters today all around New York City, warning everybody that just 4 drinks with sugar a day may add 84 packets of sugar in the body. I found this add visually effective. However, a tired, young woman sitting with her back to the sign, had not even noticed it. When I took this photo, she did turn around to look at it. I wish I could have asked her what she thought of it. Why are we so afraid to talk to strangers about topics of common interest? At what stage in our lives do we begin to do that?

Returning to the topic of the Mayor Bloomberg of New York City. He announced this decision in the New York Times on Wednesday,May 30, 2012, that he was introducing a bill to restrict the size of drinks with sugar to 16oz. This would apply only to places that sell it as a snack or with a meal, such as a restaurant. Larger bottles can still be sold at supermarkets or food marts or grocery stores. The issue is that some are questioning his authority to mandate such a restriction, even calling New York City the first “Nanny state”.

The sugar drink bill is to be submitted to the board of health on June 12. The board will vote 3 months later. Restaurants and snack bars will get 6 months thence, to comply prior to violation citation with a probable $200.00 fine. I am unaware if school cafeterias will be included in this violation list. The school budget relies on funding from the sugar drink industry to “lease” school space for the soda dispensing machines to “hydrate” the school population. This life-style change decision comes with a “loss of jobs” implication in those who profit from the job industry too. How will those jobs be replaced? Perhaps, with the money potentially saved from lower health complications of less obese people, which may be transferred to perhaps more sport educators or newly trained fitness experts.

There is a second issue which I will only mention briefly, since the Bloomberg administration is ignoring this detail, at this time. Most drinks marketed and priced for the masses are no longer sweetened with sugar but with cheaper sugar substitutes like high fructose corn syrup, which may be making people fatter today than sugar might have (see “Related Articles” below), or with sugar alternatives like aspartame for diabetics, which might be cancerous.

This brings us to the discussion of what should the role of government be with the people? When people get sick and have no health care, a kinder government arranges for public health care, preferably at no cost. However, nothing is free, because somewhere, tax money is paid by citizens to cover such ‘free’ programs benefitting the needy. Also, even those who have healthy eating and exercise habits still have to cover the higher cost of insurance rates to cover others on the same insurance coverage, who may not have healthier lifestyles. There is accumulating scientific evidence that when you have too much sugar you will get sick, sometimes very sick with chronic diseases like Diabetes.

How many of you have felt miserable when traveling long distance sitting next to a super obese person? You have paid for your seat, which entitles you to occupy your whole seat. Now, comes this super obese, kindly person, apologizes profusely, and literally pours half of this body into your seat ‘space’. How do you even begin to phrase your complaint? Many discussions after such trips begin with, “I never had this issue before, but there are too many obese people these days” or “Have you noticed how obese the people flying these days are?”

Apparently, Mayor Bloomberg noticed too and has decided that a government’s role is to stop the problem by preventing the rise of future cases of obesity. His administration is expecting an outcry from those who profit from the sugar drink industry and those who are addicted to sugar drinks. However, they are not expecting praise. After all, do citizens ever thank a politician for a wise decision? Have you heard of the phrase, “Immitation is the finest form of flattery”? I am certain that Mayor Bloomberg, his wise, far-sighted nutrition and health advisors, and his administration team who organized the posters and press release to restrict sugar drink sizes would be quite flattered if states and countries all over the world began to demand their leaders and governments follow the same process to make the world less obese in the future. The recent trend towards the super obese just has to be curtailed.

Worm Theory: to improve the immune system to fight asthma, multiple sclerosis and more

The probiotic way, where you can introduce worms or germs inside the gut by eating them intentionally, is becoming increasingly mainstream (click here). Have we “poisoned” our guts by making it sterile? Have we “killed” our ability to fight invading microbes like common bacterial infections, or usual allergens like pollen in the spring time? Perhaps, we have made our outside environment too clean, say many physicians today. Maybe, you should eat probiotics.

Worms? Yes, eat small worms or tapeworms for a healthier immune system.

Click here to read this article which also lists several scholarly articles from the year 2000 to 2007 where worms are eaten, worms of all sizes and varieties, fed by physicians in the name of clinical research because physicians are desperate to lessen the suffering of their patients. This site is completely devoted to worm therapy and even has a “frequently asked questions” page; so apparently, people who visited the site had several common questions. Some examples of questions were: “Is it safe?”, “Do I have to go to Mexico?”, “What if I want to get rid of my worms?” and more.

When great scientists go unrecognized by the nobel prize: how should the public make up for that lapse?

Any body who has a family member suffering from an auto-immune disease realizes the importance of research in immune biology. Severe allergy, Multiple sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn’s Disease, Lyme Disease, Osteoarthritis, and recently, Diabetes are a list of diseases that are related to a malfunction of the immune order in a body. The body begins to attack it’s own cells believing that it is a “foreign” cell or an invading organism that needs to be destroyed. The degeneration of parts of the body begins leading to specific disease. The New York Times covers the story of two scientists from two different countries who collaborated in the same lab to discover answers to the immune system. Read here to learn about: the seminal contributions of immunologists Charles A. Janeway Jr. (1943-2003) and Ruslan Medzhitov. Their work went unrecognized by the nobel committee. Now, you as the public must begin to award and recognize the scientists you value. Shower them with emails and let them know that you care about their research. Let them feel appreciated. Invite them for talks. Give them free dinners at talks – yes, scientists love that free cookie.

It is also well known that a strong immune system is capable of fighting disease. Monks from Tibet are being researched to teach the world how the mind can control the body’s immune system. A strong, happy person is invariab
ly a healthy person. A sad person, becomes depressed and begins to suffer from all kinds of ailments, many imagined and many real.

The immune system is two fold: The biological clock of the body controls the innate immune system – just like plants, all humans, animals and birds are conditioned by nature to wake up with the sun, have light exposure of several hours and then off to sleep by sunset or dark. Flowers close, birds stop chirping, animals begin to snore, but humans? Night shift workers have higher rates of illnesses. Could it be a biological clock gone awry?
The innate immune system controls the adaptive immune system which controls how we respond to microbes and environmental insults. When the biological clock is off, the innate immune system is off and since it controls the adaptive immune system, the response to body insult is off. Any wonder why unhappy people or those who work irregular hours feel sicker?

Which scientists should the public honor and thank for researching the innate and adaptive immune system and the way they are connected? You must read the following
A revolutionary idea of how the immune system worked. In vertebrates, two immune systems protect against infection. There’s the evolutionarily older system that all organisms, even plants, have — the innate immune system. There is also another system that evolved relatively recently, the adaptive immune system, which only vertebrates have. Janeway proposed that the innate system detects invading microbes, distinguishes them from everything else and signals the adaptive immune system to move against the intruder.

the authors of the paper did not get a nobel prize and the scientific community is very upset. They felt that the discovery of the toll receptors was worth a nobel prize. Read the New York Times article, “A long journey to the immune system” here.

Is it time to revamp intellectual property world rights and how they are implemented?

The internet has a way of democratizing knowledge.  It has allowed free access to knowledge anywhere in the world by anybody who has a computer. When Napstar, an upstart music sharing software program allowed unprecedented music download and sharing, it forever changed the way copyrights were viewed and protected. Initially, intellectual property rights were created by industries to protect their rights to research, develop and sell with a monopoly for a certain number of years a product developed with the intellectual property rights giving them protection for a few years to recoup investment.

Now, the little guy can access that knowledge and dispense it freely. What is the direction of international intellectual property protection policy to be adopted? Should policy work towards an environment encouraging more innovation which comes only from uninhibited sharing of world – wide knowledge freely? Or should it restrict sharing of content at prohibitive costs, and discouraging free sharing of knowledge? Should policy protect the investments towards research and development which has greatly increased the life span of mankind this century, and allowed automobiles to connect mankind to ends of the earth? While this has ensured large profits for the industrialized, developed world, it has benefited many. Or has it? What about the developing country’s Shamans that freely shared their ancient medicinal knowledge with the industrial developers to isolate the active chemical compound from? Did the large company ever “take care” or continue to compensate for the life of the patent the barefoot shaman in an an impoverished country who with a toothless smile shared his timeless knowledge, perhaps for free or perhaps even offering their hospitality?

Such questions were asked in the past but the answers shrugged away. However, this recent 2009 -2012 world-wide recession has brought the world together through the internet with forums discussing international needs and internation humanitarian conditions and world-wide travel and space travel and border rights and free music and hollistic medicine and mixed marriages and mixed gene pools and air rights and water rights and more. Everywhere there are youngsters understanding the international language of computers in a way their educated, elders could not imagine even today.

What is this world of the future? Who are to make the new rules? How do we continue to serve the interests of innovation and progress with world-wide dissemination of knowledge best? Should knowledge be free?

In fact, it is remarkable to consider that the areas where the Internet has succeeded most readily – for example as a giant distributed database of facts on any subject under the sun – are traditionally those in which there are little or no intellectual property rights. The software on which the Internet runs is largely open source, another Internet-enabled method of innovation to which policy makers have been slow to adapt. The Internet offers us remarkable opportunities to achieve the real goals that intellectual property policy ought to serve: encouraging innovation and facilitating the dissemination of cultural and educational materials. Yet policy making has focused almost entirely on the Internet’s potential for illicit copying. An example demonstrates the point.
• Copyright term limits are now absurdly long. The most recent retrospective extensions, to a term which already offered 99% of the value of a perpetual copyright, had the practical effect of helping a tiny number of works that are still in print, or in circulation. Estimates are between 1% and 4%. Yet in order to confer this monopoly benefit on a handful of works, works that the public had already “paid for” with a copyright term that must have been acceptable to the original author and publisher, they deny the public access to the remaining 96% of copyrighted works that otherwise would be passing into the public domain. Before the Internet, this loss – though real – would for most works have been largely a theoretical one. The cost of reprinting an out-of-print book or copying and screening a public domain film was often prohibitive. But once one adds the Internet to the equation, it becomes possible to imagine digitizing substantial parts of the national heritage as it emerges into the public domain, and making it available to the world. Now this is truly fulfilling the goals of copyright: encouraging creativity, and encouraging access.

Intellectual property firms are collapsing in 2012. The old model is no longer apparently working with a botique IP firm serving the needs of many. 65th World Health Assembly in Geneva: Mental Health and Vaccinations Resolutions 2012

From May 21-26, 2012, the 65th World Health Assembly met in Geneva, Switzerland, to resolve how to improve world public health. They re-elected Dr. Margaret Chan for a second five year term as Director General of WHO, World Health Organization. Mental Health, vaccinations, maternal and child nutrition and financing for implementing resolutions and several other public health issues were discussed over plenary sessions. Should we risk taking calcium supplementation with risk of heart attack, bones breaking and kidney disease?

ABC news today, May 24, 2012, announced that calcium supplements carry heart attack risks.  To see their video click here; reported by Dr Richard Besser of ABC, who says more than 2000 mg calcium a day causes plaques in the arteries and could damage kidneys. To read their May 24, 2012 announcement click here. People take calcium supplements to make their bones stronger but may be increasing their heart attack risk. They may be safer with a balanced diet including calcium rich food. Balance is the key word. A 2010 study suggests “that cardiovascular risks from high calcium intake might be restricted to use of calcium supplements,” according to researchers. Calcium supplementation — without giving vitamin D at the same time — appears to increase the risk of myocardial infarction, a new review of past research has shown. Read Todd Neale’s July 2010 article on this topic. Dr. Ian Reid, MD of the University of Auckland in New Zealand and colleagues reported online in BMJ some years ago,”As calcium supplements are widely used, these modest increases in risk of cardiovascular disease might translate into a large burden of disease in the population,” the researchers wrote. “A reassessment of the role of calcium supplements in the management of osteoporosis is warranted.”

Comments from Physicians on the study
Dr. Stephen Richardson, an endocrinologist at NYU Langone Medical Center,noted that the analysis was limited in that it excluded trials in which calcium supplements were given along with vitamin D.

Dr. John Cleland of the University of Hull in England and colleagues wrote in an accompanying editorial.

“Calcium supplements, given alone, improve bone mineral density, but they are ineffective in reducing the risk of fractures and might even increase risk, they might increase the risk of cardiovascular events, and they do not reduce mortality. They seem to be unnecessary in adults with an adequate diet. Given the uncertain benefits of calcium supplements, any level of risk is unwarranted. Considering the available evidence, patients with osteoporosis should generally not be treated with calcium supplements, either alone or combined with vitamin D, unless they are also receiving an effective treatment for osteoporosis for a recognized indication.”


Dr. Murray Favus, an endocrinologist at the University of Chicago, said, “I am sufficiently concerned to advise those with high calcium supplement intake to limit calcium supplement use in favor of dietary sources until the risk of supplements can be sorted out.”

Preclinical studies: Autism compound, KM-391, significantly decreased plasticity of the brain and increased serotonin levels

Cellceutix is developing an experimental drug, KM – 391, to treat autism.  Cellceutix, is a biopharmaceutical company developing small molecule drugs to treat diseases like Autism, Psoriasis and Cancer. KM-391Clinical Trial Data in Animals

Preclinical studies have shown that administration of the autism compound, KM-391, significantly decreased plasticity of the brain and increased serotonin levels in all three regions of the brain: cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and caudate nucleus, from very low levels, as seen with 5, 7-Dihydroxytryptamine (5, 7-DHT)-induced autism, to normal levels, as observed in placebo-treated control without the neurotoxin 5, 7-DHT.

Cellceutix recently acquired the small molecule technology and began preclinical trials in animals. They conducted three studies, which you may click here to read in detail on Cellceutix site. It includes:

3. KM-391 Third Study – Serotonin Levels Measured in Three Different Regions of the Brain.

“These results support KM-391 as a possible therapeutic agent in the treatment of autism in patients,” Mr. Ehrlich contends. “If we can deal with the core issues of autism and not just the symptoms of the disease, it would be a major breakthrough and offer hope to families and patients who suffer from autism.”

Based on results from a third animal study showed KM-391 was a possible therapeutic agent in the treatment of autism in patients, CEO Leo Ehrlich says Cellceutix is working on possible collaborations to further develop the autism compound, which can be quite expensive.  It has a memorandum of understanding with a company in India, able to financially support and implement all the pharmacology, preclinical work, including cGMP manufacturing, and toxicology, in compliance with U.S. IND requirements.

On November, 2011 announced Cellceutix Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Krishna Menon, “We are extremely pleased to add Dr. Marks to our team. We have assembled a world-class advisory board with Dr. Emil Frei, Dr. Samuel Danishefsky, Dr. Paul Ginsburg and now Dr. Paul Marks. Going forward with Kevetrin™ in clinical trials, as well as other drugs in our pipeline, their experience and knowledge will play a key role in our success”. Dr. Marks served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (“MSKCC”) from 1980 to 1999. His addition to the board shows the firms commitment is towards their cancer drug, also currently in the pipeline.

Do Anorexics and Autism Spectrum Disorder share any common characteristics?

Yes, say scientists in the journal, European Eating Disorder Review, published in 2011. Read the article by clicking here. They speculate if anorexia nervosa (AN) a version of autism spectrum disorders (ASD)?

There are reports of disturbed processing of oxytocin (Odent, 2010) and dysdiadochokinesis (a neurological soft sign associated with developmental disorders) in both AN and ASD (Råstam, 1992; Råstam, Gillberg, & Wentz, 2003; Tchanturia, Morris, Anderluh, Collier, Nikolaou, & Treasure, 2004). Furthermore, AN and ASD appear to co-exist within families (Gillberg, 1985; Comings & Comings, 1991; Steffenburg, 1991) indicating that these observed similarities may reflect a direct genetic link.


Based on the proposed similarities between the cognitive profiles of the disorders, it was hypothesised that ASD and AN groups would not perform differently across tasks.

What were the authors results?
Cognitive profiles of the groups were statistically similar, except for differences in the relative patterns of empathy scores. Interestingly, the scientists note that the triad of behavioural impairments (social impairment, communication impairments and restrictive and repetitive behaviours) are noted to cluster together and co-occur above chance expectations, even outside of a diagnosis of autism (Happé & Ronald, 2008; Wing & Gould, 1979). Yet, this clustering of all three cognitive features within a disorder appears fairly specific to Anorexics(AN) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The scientists add: There are, in fact, significant differences between the disorders. Whilst AN has more recently been described as a developmental disorder (Connan, Campbell, Katzman, Lightman, & Treasure, 2003), there are differences in age, gender and developmental stage of onset and there can be an association of low IQ and learning difficulties with ASD that is absent in AN.

What is Anorexia?

For those of you who do not know the current crisis of the eating disorder of young women and recently, young men, you might find this review very informative. I must warn you that some of the photos are quite disturbing. It includes a historical narrative of the changing image of the female body and shows the modern ‘anorexic’ women photos, some of whom have crossed the extreme and are dying. What is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
An autism spectrum disorder (ASD), also called a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). The Massachussetts General Hospital says ASD is a biological brain disorder that significantly affects an individual’s ability to understand people, interpret events, communicate, and interact with others. These disorders are described as occurring on a spectrum because of the wide variability of impact they may have on everyday functioning. The scope, variety, and severity of symptoms differ in each individual, but in general, autism spectrum disorders are characterized by:

Difficulty with communication
Impairments in social skills and understanding of how to engage and interact with others
Unusual behaviors and interests (such as attachments to unusual objects or speaking in cartoon or movie scripts)

Are we less healthy than our parents and grandparents – both mentally and physically?

Our grandparents could walk for miles. Our parents could drive for miles and walk for miles too. What do we do?
Today, many of us have indoor bikes which assure us we are cycling for miles; some of us do indoor aerobics at least once a week for 40 minutes. Others prefer doing several laps of indoor swimming in chlorinated pools assuring us they are germ free. Some do calisthetics while others do indoor deep breathing yoga or modern forms of indoor yoga like those in 105 degrees only. Some do indoor iceskating. Others reach out for indoor rock climbing or gym activities like indoor weight lifting.

Who is healthiest long-term?

Most of us prefer modern entertainment and news formats like TV or computer games and our grandparents wistfully talk of the days when news was exchanged in social gathering holes like the local church or temple or the country bar or village market. Our parents talk of their childhood when they ran across and collected their neighbors to play after school or on holidays. There was never any talk of “play dates” supervised by hovering helicopter parents. Child predators and child kidnappers must have existed through millennia and yet, this generation of parents are extra vigilant of child predators and kidnappers lurking everywhere and children have to be escorted everywhere, even to school and playgrounds. Do children go exploring in the woods alone any more? Did any parent shudder when I mentioned this?

The summer Olympics in Great Britain of 2012, will witness Olympians breaking many previous records, demonstrating speed and strength unimaginable by our ancestors. Are we truly a superior human race today?

The fastest runners in the world

All this, and yet, this generation may be the first modern generation in which many parents may outlive their children, or the parents may be too scared to out live their child with Autism, and “new” debilating musculo skeletal and mental disorders. Many have fibromyalgia. Many are way beyond fat and the term obese needs to be replaced by a term implying double, triple or multiple times of what would qualify as a fat person until the 1970s. This is the first generation were women are being crippled by knee pain which was rare in their grandmothers. Young women are being diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in numbers unheard off in their parents or grandparents generation. It is not unusual to have classrooms trying to accomodate for Autism Spectrum Disorder, and several young children with leukemia, or childhood cancers.

Several athletes are confessing to strength enhancing drugs undetectable by current standards of drug testing. Such drugs are in the hands of only the most “developed” nations and although in the knowledge of the athletes of the “underdeveloped” competitors through locker room conversations, it is unaffordable. So, the ancient Olympic and Cycling competitions have become a show case of which nation has access to the latest drug test busting, strength enhancing know-how; clearly demonstrated by the human athletes of “inferior” nations trailing far behind the “superior” nations. Has the human race evolved differently when divided by oceans in a few decades, when evolution from apes to neanderthals and humans took millennia? Unlikely, but athletes have positive attitudes and never complain. They simply do their best. 1) A series of articles in New York Times on Obesity of which the most emailed one by Dr Carson Chow on May 14, 2012, entitled, “A mathematical challenge to obesity“, in which the conclusion is that while physical activity has not changed much in thirty years, food consumption has increased, and may be the leading cause of the rise in obesity”. 2) Studies question the pairing of food deserts and obesity by Gina Kolata, April 17, 2012, also part of the above series of articles in New York Times, which summarizes conclusions from several scholarly studies finding that there is no correlation between food sold in a neighborhood and childhood obesity. Compare with article above.
3)The largest ever genome – wide study of childhood obesity by Dr Grant and his team, at Childhood hospital of Philadelphia. They characterize and identify a genetic predisposition to childhood obesity. They caution that babies born with these genes will not necessarily grow into obese children. To avoid obesity they advise better diet and a more active lifestyle.

Note from PursueNatural: Above authors say better diet and more active lifestyle – wait, is it not exactly what this generation is supposed to be doing? Yet, obesity rates are over 30% higher than in 1970s, while these obesity genes have existed for millennia, presumably even as we evolved from apes and neanderthals and our healthy, non-obese grandparents.

4) An article you must read is by Prof Yan Yu, in April 2012, in the journal, Obesity, as reported by “Educational Differences in Obesity in the United States: A Closer Look at the Trends” Quote.

……Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), we address these issues and examine changing educational differences in obesity from 1971–1980 to 1999–2006 for non-Hispanic whites and blacks in two separate age groups (25–44 vs. 45–64 years). We find that (i) obesity differentials by education have remained largely stable, (ii) compared with college graduates, less educated whites and younger black women continue to be more likely to be obese, (iii) but the differentials are larger for women than men, and weak or nonexistent among black men and older black women. 5) “Why Have Americans Become More Obese?” by Professors David M. Cutler, Edward L. Glaeser and Jesse M. Shapiro, offering an economic impact of this obesity epidemic. Quote…

In the early 1960s, the average American adult male weighed 168 pounds. Today, he weighs nearly 180 pounds. Over the same time period, the average female adult weight rose from 143 pounds to over 155 pounds (U.S. Depart- ment of Health and Human Services, 1977, 1996). In the early 1970s, 14 percent of the population was classified as medically obese. Today, obesity rates are two times higher (Centers for Disease Control, 2003).
Weights have been rising in the United States throughout the twentieth century, but the rise in obesity since 1980 is fundamentally different from past changes. For most of the twentieth century, weights were below levels recom- mended for maximum longevity (Fogel, 1994), and the increase in weight repre- sented an increase in health, not a decrease. Why is the average little child super obese today, when compared to our grandparents generation? Simply look around you.

Note from PursueNatural Yes, you may be very thin and working hard towards being healthy the best way you know how. Yet, if your neighbor or the person in the next town is super, super obese and their three year old child is 200 lbs, yes, your tax dollars will be used towards this public epidemic of obesity related health issues. Money that could be used to improve roads and schools and repair century old bridges and tunnels and airports and pay for increased vigilance and security, will go towards treating the millions of super – super obese, unless you act now to add your voice to question this modern epidemic of obesity. Science says, the rate of rise of the super-super obese since the 1970s does not follow what would be considered a rational trend.

Read the above links. Be informed. Be knowledgeable. Be proactive. Is not your goal to be healthier and live in a cleaner, safer and more technologically superior environment than your grandparents? We may be planning a space module with overbooked flights carrying celebreties to space. However, our infrastructure on this earth may crumble due to lack of tax funding. Perhaps, begin to raise private funds towards infrastructure maintainance while the “new” diseases of obesity and Autism Spectrum Disorder and resultant health issues are worked out?
